Rebuilding with local knowledge and international expertise

Following the devastating earthquake of 31 August, thousands of families in eastern Afghanistan lost their homes. Khan Foundation immediately launched a crowdfunding campaign and, thanks to donors, raised more than €100,000 for emergency relief and the first steps of reconstruction.

Together with BD+P, a local technical team and international experts, we are developing a robust and scalable housing model for Kunar’s mountainous landscape. The design combines Afghan building traditions and locally suitable materials with improved seismic resilience, structural stability and spatial organisation.

Homes are arranged in small clusters along the natural contour lines. This terraced model reduces excavation and improves drainage, stability and accessibility. It creates a replicable approach that can grow from a first pilot cluster into wider reconstruction of safe and future-ready rural communities.

Next phase

Structural engineering, material specifications, cost estimates and preparation of the first homes.
